Samsung to introduce technology which provides high quality chest x-ray images even with half the dose level

[의학신문·일간보사=오인규 기자] At the Korea International Medical and Hospital Equipment Show 2019(KIMES 2019), the largest medical device exposition in South Korea, Samsung Electronics will showcase its premium digital x-ray, “GC85A with Prestige - fixed”(Image 1) and GM85 with Prestige - mobile”(Image 2). Applied with S-Vue™, the image processing technology that provides the same chest image quality even with half of the conventional amount of radiation dosage, both products have received U.S. FDA approval in November 2017 for adult chest, and its scope of approval has been expanded to include child abdominal, chest, skull and has been recognized for reducing the radiation amount to up to 45%.

■ “S-Vue™,” providing same quality image even with low-dose equipment

S-Vue™, the image processing technology equipped in Samsung x-ray enables users to acquire high-resolution images constantly by eliminating image noise and other ways to improve resolution. Especially, spatially adaptive multi-sacale processing and advanced de-noising technology preserve the image quality at high standards despites the reduced dose of radiation. The images acquired through S-Vue™, in particular, are very clear so that users can identify the areas where bones overlap and the skin boundary areas.

■ ‘S-Guide,’ taking into account x-ray usability and convenience

S-Guide technology allows the user to adjust the various values using camera image needed to scan stitching area, thereby enhancing the level of convenience for the radiographer. Through the S-Station, users can either adjust the scanning area or the stitching area settings and the AEC field of each image when stitching the images.

■ ‘SimGrid™,’ providing grid effects even without Grid (image 3)

Using the post-processing technology, the device can creates hardware grid effect without a portable grid by reducing scatter radiation effects that is used to produce high quality images. Users can save time needed for attaching Grid, while patients can reduce waiting time. The device helps enhance examination efficiency by enabling patients to receive treatment much faster.

■ ‘Bone Suppression,’ even detecting lesion hidden behind bones (image 4)

Bone Suppression uses S/W algorithm to detect lesion hidden behind bones. Samsung Electronics’ GC85A and GM85 will be on display at the Samsung Exhibition Hall at COEX Hall C210 during KIMES 2019, while demo services for GM85 are also available. More detailed information for all of Samsung’s x-ray equipment can be found on Samsung Health Care website.

FDA 510(k) clearance: The non-clinical and clinical image evaluations show that the proposed devices with the new IPE(Image Post-processing Engine) employing and advanced noise reduction algorithm are able to reduce x-ray dose up to 47.5% for abdominal radiographs of average adult and up to 45% for pediatric abdomen, 15.5% for pediatric chest, and up to 27% for pediatric skull exams, compared with radiation doses needed to obtain similar image quality using the old IPE on the same x-ray systems.
