Launched Peritoneal Dialysis Patient Data Optimized System…Clinicians Capable of Monitoring In-home Treatment Results At All Times

[의학신문·일간보사=김현기 기자] The optimized system for managing data of peritoneal dialysis patients manufactured by Baxter“, Sharesource®,”which had to be done by self-treatment and manual input of the results, is garnering much attention.

Baxter’s “Sharesource” has maximized convenience through the management of patient data records, which had to be written manually on top of the treatment convenience of carrying out automated peritoneal dialysis treatment at home.

Automated peritoneal dialysis treatment, an at-home treatment of automatically exchanging dialysate at night while patients with chronic kidney disease is asleep, thereby enabling students and office workers to enjoy freedom during the daytime.

However, patients who undergo peritoneal dialysis treatment need to carry out at-home dialysis treatment everyday, and visit the hospital once every month to check the record results with clinicians.

Therefore, the treatment has had difficulties where patients need to manually input and manage data everyday, and had restrictions on the monitoring of adherence to the diagnosed treatment.

According to Baxter staff, "Sharesource,”a cloudbased patient data management system can enable clinicians to check digitally the results of treatment the patient undergoes.

The treatment information is automatically delivered to the clinician via Sharesouce on the day after the patient carries out automated peritoneal dialysis treatment to enable the medical staff to review, analyze and evaluate the treatment results.

More specifically, Sharesource enables clinicians to monitor the patient’s weight and the amount of moisture (night cycle UF) that has decreased from dialysis, as well as the input percycle, speed and amount of draining and alarm frequency.

The system also enables clinicians to monitor whether there was treatment halt or a arbitrary reduction of treatment time and dosage during the course of the dialysis treatment. Moreover, in case when there is an issue with the data pre-set by the hospital in accordance to the patient’s condition, a red flag will be displayed on its side, o that the clinician can immediately identify any problem with the treatment.

When the medical staff sees there are problems with Baxter “Sharesource,” the patient’s conditions, the clinician requests the patient to visit the hospital, and can change necessary prescription while they sit face-to-face.

A Baxter staff explained that “With Sharesource, patients can experience enhanced convenience as they do not have to write the treatment results, as the information is automatically recorded and saved, and maximize treatment effect and reduce emergency situation as the information is linked to the clinicians at all times.”

■ Enabling patient-tailored care... expected to be used for clinical studies with accumulated data= Moreover, he data accumulated via Sharesource enables clinicians to establish treatment plans for the patients and provide systematic tailored care.

The platform can also increase confidence for the guardians who take care of the patients by enabling them to carry out sustained systematic data management.

The same applies for medical staff, who can review patient’s at-home conditions and treatment conditions through the data management system, enabling them to manage information at appropriate times.

This can lead to individualized and tailored treatment and care, thereby enhancing preventive effects. Going further, the accumulated data can also be used for various research and clinical purposes.

Therefore, Sharesource is expected to increase the level of convenience for patients who undergo automated peritoneal dialysis and have positive treatment effects.

In face, the medical industry has already confirmed the treatment effects of patients who undergo automated peritoneal dialysis, with many saying that there has been a significant change enabling innovative treatment approach through sustained management.

■ Over 5 mil. treatment cases for 15,000 patients in some 40 countries= Since it was first introduced in the U.S. in 2015, Sharesource is being used by 15,000 patients in 40 countries around the world, including the U.S., UK, Autralia, Hong Kong and Japan, and over 5 million cases have already been carried out.

In South Korea, 30 patients have used Sharesource through clinical studies from 2017 to 2018, and the platform is provided to dialysis patients at Seoul National Univeristy Hospital and Kyungbuk University Hospital.

Baxter forecasts that digital health care technology like Sharesource can enhance the level of medical service quality, contributing to public health.

A Baxter staff says, “South Korea is at a very advantageous situation to utilize patient data for strategic analysis, considering the country’s medical insurance scheme and outstanding hospital IT infrastructure,” adding that such public health information connection can enhance disease prediction and improve treatment methods, thereby raising the quality of treatment and reasonably using medical expenses.”

In addition, the staff also stressed that such technology can be used for arrhythmia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Explaining that “the patient data management system enable the monitoring of arrhythmia occurrence pattern through the inserted defibrillator,” the staff also added that “the home oxygen therapy and tritation device for COPD patients can also be monitored consistently, and the platform is already being used at various areas and showing maximized patient treatment.”
